FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TORQUE OVERLOAD: SAFETY COUPLINGS FROM R+W

Machine torque overloads can have many different causes. Regardless of the cause, R+W safety couplings provide a fast, reliable disconnect between driving and driven components in the event of a torque spike in excess of a pre-set level, helping to prevent damage and downtime.

THE TECHNICAL BASIS: THE BALL-DETENT PRINCIPLE OF R+W SAFETY COUPLINGS

R+W safety couplings operate on the spring-loaded ball-detent principle and serve as overload breakaway devices. They provide rigid, zero-backlash transmission during normal operation, and if the application torque exceeds a pre-set limit, the balls disengage from their detents to disconnect the driveline.

OVERVIEW OF SAFETY COUPLINGS FROM R+W

MECHANICAL SAFETY COUPLINGS HAVE A CLEAR ADVANTAGE

Fast reaction is one of the decisive benefits of mechanical safety couplings. While electronic safety components have a typical reaction time to overload of approximately 15 to 17 milliseconds, a mechanical safety coupling completely disconnects the driving and driven components of a system within 3 to 5 milliseconds. More importantly, they can protect against inertial torque already delivered by the motor at the time the blockage occurs.

Ball-detent type torque limiters offer further advantages over other types of mechanical overload protection. While most other safety coupling types, such as slip clutches, hydraulic couplings, and shear pin couplings are subject to a degradation of the disengagement torque setting over time, ball-detent couplings remain permanently stable and repeatable.

AS INDIVIDUAL AS YOUR MACHINE - TAILOR-MADE SAFETY ELEMENTS FROM R+W

R+W safety couplings provide optimal protection for machine tools, packaging machinery, rolling mills, test stands and many more equipment types. They are available in various models and configurations of differing sizes and functional modes for torques ranging from 0.1 to more than 450,000 Nm.
